History
Jim started farming
hogs and beef, changing to only hogs in the early 1990's and to a farrow to
finish operation in the late 1990's. This was a time of change, and there were many more
changes to come for Meadowbrook due to being in an industry that faces many challenges.
Jim and Margie have chosen to make many changes to the farm over the years in order to remain a
viable part of the industry. One of our most recent changes was working with animal nutritionists
to grow Omega Pork with an all-natural, antibiotic and animal
bi-product free feed. We are the first in Atlantic Canada to do so.
It was during this time, from very humble beginnings that we
opened the doors to our first meat market. We started as a small
single dwelling, open only on Saturdays to sell a side of pork
, fresh cuts and ham .
Over the years, thanks to our many loyal customers we have grown
exponentially! As demand grew, so did the size of our staff and
market.
In the mid nineties, we became provincially inspected. Our animals are slaughtered offsite
at a provincially inspected facility, independent of us.
In October of 2007, we celebrated the opening of our new,
larger processing and retail market. With this expansion, we
have the space needed to do more processing and grow our
product line , as well as enabling us to carry
quality products from 30+ local producers.
Catering was an addition to the farm in the early 90's as well. It
began as a way for local producers in the area to promote local
pork. Eventually, we purchased the BBQ from the producers
and what was once the occasional weekend BBQ get-together,
has grown to a year round business, Pork on Wheels
Jim and Margie have dedicated their lives to the community through farming and teaching.
Thanks to the ongoing support from our customers and community, life is forever busy. In
addition to running a multifaceted operation, Jim has maintained a sales business with
Pioneer Hi-bred for more than 30 years. He has received a lifetime achievement award
from EKCC and the Lambs continue to be active voices in the community through Rotary, 4-H,
and other initiatives.(Select NS),
(Employer of Choice), (Taste of NS).
At Meadowbrook, we are blessed to have dedicated,
friendly, knowledgeable staff in all areas of our operation.
Many of our staff have years of experience in farming,
customer service and the meat industry. It is with their
daily efforts in working with us that we are able to strive
for excellence in all areas of production, bringing our
customers quality products.
